This castle still stands today in Matsumoto, my grandmother’s hometown, but I wanted to imagine what it might have been like to sit across the moat at the height of its glory in 1635. A pair of samurai meander across the famous crimson bridge, gazing back at the walls of the castle. The dark wooden walls that inspired the castle’s nickname “Karasu-jo” (Crow’s Castle) proved a challenging subject to paint under a powerfully warm sunset light. With eye-catching detail and an infusion of golden color, this painting gives me a sense of unexplainable nostalgia for an era I’ve never seen.
